Iapr Technical Paper Series Skill Uncertainty and Social Inference

چکیده

Research in psychology indicates that individuals often make inferences regarding unknown individual qualities based on potentially irrelevant (but socially observable) information. This paper explores occupational choices when individuals receive imprecise signals regarding ability and use the observable characteristics of previously successful individuals to infer own ability. Individuals who fail to observe successful predecessors of their same type may underestimate their potential for success in the occupation. We discuss the role of these biases in light of the literature on affirmative action and firm incentives. JEL Codes: D63, D83, J64, J70

Iapr Technical Paper Series Paretian Dictators: Constraining Choice in a Voluntary Contribution Game

We explore individuals’ preferences over limiting the choice sets of themselves and others. Specifically, we conduct public goods games in which participants can mandate the contributions of others or restrict choices to a subset of feasible contributions levels. We find that, relative to a baseline treatment in which individuals make choices from the set of all contribution alternatives, allow...

Procrustean statistical inference of deformations

A two step method has been devised for the statistical inference of deformation changes. In the first step of this method and based on Procrustes analysis of deformation tensors, the significance of the change in a time or space series of deformation tensors is statistically analyzed. In the second step significant change(s) in deformations are localized. In other words, they are assigned to ce...

The IAPR TC-12 Benchmark: A New Evaluation Resource for Visual Information Systems

In this paper, we describe an image collection created for the CLEF cross-language image retrieval track (ImageCLEF). This image retrieval benchmark (referred to as the IAPR TC-12 Benchmark) has developed from an initiative started by the Technical Committee 12 (TC-12) of the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR). The collection consists of 20,000 images from a private photogr...

TrueSkill Through Time: Revisiting the History of Chess

We extend the Bayesian skill rating system TrueSkill to infer entire time series of skills of players by smoothing through time instead of filtering. The skill of each participating player, say, every year is represented by a latent skill variable which is affected by the relevant game outcomes that year, and coupled with the skill variables of the previous and subsequent year. Inference in the...
